The Kiamal solar farm covers a surface area of 500 hectares on the outskirts of Ouyen, in the state of Victoria. It is the biggest solar farm in the state of Victoria. The project is unique thanks to its 190 MVA Synchronous Condenser (“syncon”), the first solar farm co-located syncon in the world and the largest in Australia. The electricity generated by Kiamal is contracted through four Power Purchase Agreements (“PPAs”) to Australian manufacturer Mars Australia, two energy retailers (Alinta Energy and Flow Power), and a collective of 13 leading Victorian water corporations (collectively known as Zero Emissions Water or “ZEW”). A Large-Scale Generation Certificate (LGC) or “renewable energy certificate” contract has also been signed with Origin Energy, a leading Australian energy retailer. Kiamal produces enough electricity to supply about 130,000 households in the region and displaces more than 600,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year. The Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) owns a minority stake in Kiamal’s capital.
