TotalEnergies develops a new solar park in Castilla La Mancha

Madrid, February 21, 2024 - TotalEnergies, a multi-energy company, has acquired from the developer Synergia the Dehesa Nueva del Rey solar plant, located in Seseña (Toledo).

59 MW that will avoid the emission of around 32,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year

With an area of about 90 hectares, this photovoltaic project, whose construction is scheduled to begin during the first half of this year, will have an installed capacity of 59 MW. Once operational, its more than 95,000 solar panels will generate enough electricity to cover the estimated annual consumption of more than 33,000 homes, while avoiding the emission of nearly 32,000 tons of CO₂ into the atmosphere per year.

Therefore, TotalEnergies keeps moving forward to its goal of developing renewable energies in Spain. This ready-to-build project adds to the 3 GW portfolio of solar photovoltaic projects that the company already has with environmental permits in Madrid, Murcia, Andalusia, Aragon and Castilla La Mancha. It is estimated that these solar plants will generate enough renewable electricity, once in operation, to cover the estimated average annual consumption of a region such as the Community of Madrid.

"TotalEnergies has made a firm commitment to contribute to Spain's energy transition with the promotion of renewable energies. We continue to make progress in achieving our objectives with the incorporation of projects such as Dehesa Nueva del Rey, with all the necessary permits to start construction, and expanding our portfolio of renewable energy projects, which now exceeds 4 GW, according to our multi-energy strategy. Everything to offer Spanish consumers sustainable, more affordable and closer energy," said Yago Mancebo Ferreiro, Managing Director of TotalEnergies Renewables Spain.

Commitment to a sustainable energy transition

For TotalEnergies, ensuring that the development of its solar plants is fully compatible with the protection of the biodiversity in the areas where they are installed is a priority and a hallmark.

For this reason, the company has launched a pioneering chair in Europe, the Steppe Forward Chair, together with the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM) and the Centre for Forest Science and Technology of Catalonia (CTFC), to generate knowledge and specific application protocols so that plants can be, from the initial phases of projects to those of exploitation, facilities that respect the environment and the biodiversity of its surroundings.

In this phase, preliminary studies have been carried out to learn about the habits and behaviour of the local birdlife before and after the construction of the Dehesa Nueva del Rey solar farm, so that the compensatory measures are designed and executed in the most effective way in order to achieve their main objective:  ensure compatibility between photovoltaic projects and biodiversity conservation.
